“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”—Matthew 28: 19-20

In Matthew 28:19-20 Jesus is commissioning His disciples to spread the Gospel. He has instructed us to do the same. We are His disciples called to share the love of Jesus with those around us. You don’t have to be a preacher or have a degree in theology to do this. God uses ordinary people like you and me. There wasn’t anything special about the 12 disciples except that they left their former lives to follow Jesus. We are called to do the same. 

Where I live in Texas, this is the time of the year where there is pollen everywhere. Lawn furniture and windows have a green tint to them from what is in the air. It is a reminder that it is spring and time to do some much needed cleaning both inside and outside of our home. 

Sometimes it is the same with my heart. What do you or I have to leave behind to truly follow Jesus as His disciples did? What bad habits or attitudes need to be shed for us to be true disciples of Christ? God knows we aren’t perfect, but it is through our imperfections where His light can truly shine through us.

On a daily basis, I struggle with negative thinking and wrong thoughts that put a wedge between me and the Lord. Praise God, for His love and mercy that I have access to the Holy Spirit living inside of me that gives me the ability to choose optimism over pessimism. We all have the choice to live a life of joy over dread. 

Last week I challenged you to speak kind words to people that you encountered throughout your day. This is one way God gives me a joyful heart where His love will spill over to others in my sphere of influence. I know we live in a society that thinks more about what we can get than what we can give, but let’s try and make a radical shift to think about ways we can be more mindful to those around us. 

Lord, purify and change my heart to match my actions. I ask that You fill me up so I can overflow Your grace, love mercy and kindness to those around me. Remove things from my life that are putting a wedge between You and I. Help me to be more deliberate in loving people put in my pathway this week. It is in the name of Jesus that I pray these things. Amen.
