Staying Grounded
“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:7 (NLT)
Tuesday evening, while working on writing, my husband asked if I had to do a blog every week. I told, him, No, but it is something I want to do. When I don’t feel as if it is something I should be doing, I will stop. God willing, I know each week, God will guide my hands with what to write.
Wednesday morning, it got me thinking about his question. Which leads to my blog post title, Staying Grounded. Not only does writing a weekly post keep me grounded in God’s Word, but it also helps me to stay focused on serving Him as well as hold me accountable.
A few months ago, I read a devotion about something someone put into practice before their morning quiet time that helped them stay focused. Prior to picking up your Bible or reading your morning devotions, write down all the thoughts that are buzzing through your head. They also recommended doing this before you pour yourself a cup of coffee.
I thought to myself, why not try this? For about a month, I implemented this into my morning routine. It would only take a few minutes to do while waiting for my coffee to brew. I put down on paper, what things were on my mind that would invade my headspace during my quiet time.
For me, many of the things I had written down were what I was going to be doing that day. My mind can easily wander to my “to do list” while I am doing my Bible reading. This turned out to be a good tool that reframed my day. By releasing these thoughts on paper, it aided in keeping me more focused.
I had a small notebook separate from the journal I use for my Bible reading/devotion notes. Notice, I wrote this in past tense. I am not sure why I stopped doing it. With the busyness of this time of the year, I am finding myself back to getting sidetracked in my mornings. Had I written about this when I started this, I would probably still be doing it. Writing about it, holds me more accountable, which is why I am sharing it this week. Better late than never😆.
That small habit before my quiet time that I had started and then stopped, is going to be put back into my morning routine. It did help me. I love the GNT of Colossians 2:7; Keep your roots deep in him, build your lives on him, and become stronger in your faith, as you were taught. And be filled with thanksgiving. Writing this post each week is a way for me to deepen my roots in Christ, strengthen my faith and be thankful for each day God gives me to share His love with others.
What are some of your daily habits that keep you grounded in both God’s Word and will for you? If you struggle with wandering thoughts during your morning quiet time, why not try clearing your mind by writing those things down before you read your morning devotion.
Yes, I did get sidetracked and stopped doing this for a month or two, but thankfully God brought it back to my mind to integrate back into my morning routine. God knows what I need. The enemy is going to do whatever he can to try and get us off track, but thankfully, we have a loving Father whose will for us is to strengthen and grow our faith.
Father God,
Forgive me when I let my day’s activities fill my head rather than focus on what You are trying to teach me through Your Word. I thank You for reminding me of what I can do clear my mind prior to my morning time with You. Help me deepen my roots and strengthen my faith so that I will overflow with thankfulness. I lift those up to You who struggle with preoccupation during their quiet time. I pray these things in the name of Jesus. Amen.
